Virtual Pre-COP29 Youth Climate Summit: Amplifying Youth Voices on Climate Finance and Resilience

The Young Professional and Youth Coalition (YPYC), in partnership with Frontline for Climate Action, the Forestry Commission of Ghana and the Environmental Protection Agency, is hosting the Pre-COP29 Youth Climate Summit as a virtual event aimed at elevating youth engagement and leadership in global climate initiatives.

This summit offers a unique platform for youth to connect with and contribute to the climate action agenda ahead of COP29.

In the face of an intensifying climate crisis—marked by rising sea levels, extreme temperatures, and worsening natural disasters—this gathering will empower youth voices and align them with the global priorities of COP29, including climate finance, international climate action, and temperature control targets.

Scheduled for November 1, 2024, and accessible online to participants worldwide, the summit is designed to reach a broad audience of 250 young professionals, students, climate activists, community leaders, and media representatives. Key objectives include fostering a deeper understanding of climate adaptation and resilience, mobilizing youth to champion climate finance, and advancing youth-led solutions to climate challenges.

A central figure at the event will be Cedric Dzelu, YPYC’s Climate Envoy, Executive Director of Frontline for Climate Action, and the Youth Focal Person on Climate Change for the African Youth Commission. Dzelu’s insights and advocacy for youth-driven initiatives will guide discussions on climate justice and the necessity for sustainable climate financing, ensuring youth perspectives remain at the forefront of COP29.

Objectives of the Virtual Pre-COP29 Youth Climate Summit:

  • Evaluate the impacts of climate change on youth and discuss actionable priorities for COP29.

  • Mobilize youth engagement around COP29's key objectives, particularly in climate finance and resilience.

  • Equip young participants with skills for effective involvement in climate adaptation and sustainability.

  • Inspire youth-led individual and collective actions for climate mitigation.

  • Formulate a cohesive youth message for COP29 centered on climate justice and equitable solutions.

Summit Theme and Sub-Themes: The summit’s main theme, “Empowering Youth for Climate Finance and Resilience: A Pathway to COP29,” underscores the significant role of young people in driving climate resilience and advocating for sustainable climate finance. Sub-themes will include:

  1. Preparing for COP29: Youth as Catalysts for Climate Action.

  2. Supporting Youth-Led Climate Initiatives for Long-Term Impact.

  3. Building Resilience: Youth as Leaders in Climate Adaptation.

This virtual summit will foster youth-led commitments and proposals on climate finance and adaptation, spotlighting youth-driven initiatives on an international scale. By providing an inclusive space for young voices, the event empowers youth to shape an impactful agenda for COP29, advancing global objectives in climate finance, resilience, and sustainability.
