Frontline for Climate Action (FCA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Elsie Lucky Mensah as Project Pillar Lead for Environmental Justice Campaigns under its Powering Justice: Grassroots Advocacy for Energy Sovereignty and a Just Transition in Ghana project, supported by the Global Greengrants Fund.

Her appointment reflects FCA's commitment to identifying, empowering and providing meaningful leadership opportunities for young environmental advocates who demonstrate passion, initiative and a commitment to advancing climate justice and sustainable development.

As Ghana advances its climate action and energy transition ambitions, the participation of young people in environmental governance, community mobilisation and public advocacy has become increasingly important. FCA believes that young leaders must not only participate in climate conversations but must also be empowered to lead initiatives that translate climate commitments into practical action.

Elsie Lucky Mensah is an emerging environmental advocate with practical experience in environmental education, community mobilisation, sustainability campaigns and youth engagement. Through her involvement with CYNESA Ghana, Elsie has participated in several environmental initiatives, including school-based educational workshops on reusable plastics and plastic waste, beach clean-up exercises, tree-planting activities and advocacy against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in collaboration with A Rocha Ghana.

These experiences have strengthened her understanding of the relationship between environmental protection, public awareness and community participation in addressing environmental challenges. Beyond her grassroots environmental engagement, Elsie has demonstrated strong communication, negotiation and collaborative problem-solving abilities.

She participated in the Best Diplomat Conference in Dubai, where she received the Best Negotiator Award, recognising her abilities in negotiation and diplomatic engagement.

Her combination of grassroots advocacy experience, communication skills and commitment to environmental sustainability positions her to contribute meaningfully to the implementation of the Powering Justice initiative. Elsie has also expressed a strong conviction that environmental justice must ensure that communities, particularly women and young people, have a voice in decisions affecting their environment and livelihoods.

As Project Pillar Lead for Environmental Justice Campaigns, Elsie will coordinate activities aimed at strengthening public awareness, grassroots mobilisation and community participation in environmental and energy justice advocacy.

Her responsibilities will include:

  • Community Awareness and Advocacy: Coordinating environmental justice campaigns that educate communities on environmental challenges, energy sovereignty and the importance of a just transition.

  • Grassroots Mobilisation: Engaging young people, women, community groups and civil society organisations to promote collective environmental action.

  • Storytelling and Media Engagement: Amplifying community experiences and environmental concerns through public storytelling, media advocacy and awareness campaigns.

  • Environmental Justice Advocacy: Promoting greater understanding of the impacts of fossil fuel development, environmental degradation and the need for equitable and sustainable energy solutions.

  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Working with other project pillar leads, community representatives and relevant stakeholders to strengthen participation and support community-centred advocacy.

Through these activities, Elsie will contribute to FCA's broader objective of ensuring that communities, especially women and young people, are informed, empowered and actively involved in shaping Ghana's sustainable energy future.

About the Powering Justice Project

Powering Justice: Grassroots Advocacy for Energy Sovereignty and a Just Transition in Ghana is a three-month initiative implemented by Frontline for Climate Action with support from the Global Greengrants Fund.

The project seeks to empower grassroots communities, particularly women and young people, to advocate for environmental justice, energy sovereignty and an inclusive transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy systems.

The initiative is structured around four complementary pillars: Advocacy Dialogues, Women's Leadership in Energy Justice, Environmental Justice Campaigns and Energy Sovereignty Awareness.

Through these interventions, FCA aims to facilitate constructive engagement between communities and policymakers, strengthen the capacity of 50 women climate advocates, increase public understanding of environmental justice and promote community awareness of decentralised renewable energy solutions.

The Environmental Justice Campaigns pillar, under Elsie's leadership, will play an important role in connecting these objectives with grassroots communities through awareness creation, public engagement and advocacy.

Elsie's appointment represents more than an individual leadership opportunity. It reflects FCA's broader philosophy that meaningful climate action requires investing in the next generation of environmental leaders.

Congratulations, Elsie! Together, we are powering justice, empowering communities and building a sustainable future for Ghana.

People. Power. Just Energy for a Sustainable Ghana.
