Peter Martin and Afia Bemah Nimako Propel Frontline for Climate Action to New Heights at AYCAF Inception Meeting

On Wednesday, August 7, 2024, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) hosted the inception meeting for the Accra Youth Climate Action Fund (AYCAF) initiative at Okoe Vanderpuije Hall. Supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, the event brought together the initiative's winners, providing a platform for networking, mentor interactions, and discussions on the roadmap for upcoming program phases.

Frontline for Climate Action, led by Project Lead Peter Martin and Fiscal Lead Afia Bemah Nimako, was one of the 12 innovative projects selected for funding. Their project, "Integrating Climate Change Education in Local Governance and Development," exemplifies the organization's commitment to tackling climate change through education and innovative strategies. This selection highlights the tremendous work of Frontline for Climate Action in promoting sustainable practices and empowering youth.

The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Elizabeth Naa Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey, congratulated the winners, for their dedication to impactful climate action. Other notable guests included Bernard Boakye, Project Manager, Evans Adjei, Resilience Officer for AMA, and other AMA officials.

With support from Bloomberg Philanthropies, the funding aims to assist projects in mitigating climate change activities. Guidelines for fund usage include:

  • Do not use project funds for political or personal activities.

  • A refusal to use funds for project purposes will require a refund.

  • 100% of the payment will be disbursed into the organization's account.

  • Any budget deviation above 10% must be communicated to the project team (AMA) for approval.

Project Reporting and Monitoring

Organizations must submit progress reports detailing challenges, solutions, and lessons learned. Reports should be submitted within a month upon completion and include feedback and recommendations. The AMA will conduct periodic surveys and site visits to monitor progress.

Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) will be based on project objectives, using key performance indicators (KPIs) such as baseline surveys and short-term and long-term impact assessments. Monthly visits from AMA, site visits, and a final evaluation report within a month are required.

Roles and Responsibilities

An independent assessment will be conducted by foreign partners, Bloomberg Philanthropies. Additionally, project funds should range between $1,000 and $5,000. Each project group will receive a call to adjust their implementation plan and budget by Friday.

The AYCAF initiative, launched in April 2024, aims to empower Accra's youth to actively participate in climate action and sustainability projects, emphasizing the vital role young people play in addressing climate change challenges. Frontline for Climate Action's inclusion in this initiative underscores their leadership in fostering a sustainable future.
