Youth Rising for a Climate-Just Future: A Transformative Climate Justice Advocacy Training in Ghana

ree

In November 2025, a powerful spark was lit in Prampram, Ghana - a spark carried by the voices, hopes, and determination of young Africans ready to champion climate justice. The Climate Justice Advocacy Training – Ghana Edition, convened by Frontline for Climate Action (FCA) in strategic partnership with the International Climate Change Development Initiative (ICCDI) of Nigeria, gathered 50 young climate activists for an intensive day of learning, empowerment, and movement-building. Hosted at the Ebenezer Methodist Church and supported by the Ningo-Prampram District Assembly, YMCA Ghana, and Funding for Social Change Ltd, the programme marked a milestone for youth-led climate advocacy in West Africa.

A Convergence of Purpose: Building Africa’s Climate Justice Movement

The training was designed with a clear mission: to build the capacity of young activists with the knowledge, tools, and networks necessary to lead climate justice advocacy. From foundational climate justice theory to practical policy influence and storytelling for change, the programme recognised that African youth are not just stakeholders — they are front-line defenders of environmental justice.

Across Africa, communities face disproportionate climate impacts. Coastal towns like Prampram continue to endure rising sea levels, biodiversity loss, and shifting livelihoods. Yet, as emphasized in the report’s opening visuals and remarks, these communities are not passive victims. They are ready to lead — and the Ghana Edition training created the platform to amplify that leadership.

Leadership Voices: A Call to Action Rooted in Community

Throughout the programme, influential leaders, facilitators, and traditional authorities delivered powerful messages reinforcing the urgency of youth advocacy.

Nene Teye Nartey I, Youth Chief of the Prampram Traditional Area, emphasized the cultural and ancestral responsibility to protect the land.

His words reminded participants that climate justice is both a global and community obligation.

FCA’s Head of Programs, Solomon Terkutey Djangmah, expressed pride in the youth-led momentum, recognizing their power to influence climate governance across the continent.

ICCDI’s Ismailia Shittu reinforced the training’s regional significance, underlining Africa’s need for cross-country solidarity on climate advocacy.

His message highlighted the commitment to expanding climate justice initiatives beyond borders.

Statements from YMCA Ghana and media partner Pram City TV echoed support for youth empowerment and the role of communication in inspiring climate consciousness.

A Comprehensive Training Approach: Four Sessions for Impact

The programme was structured into four core sessions, each designed to equip young activists with critical competencies.

1. Understanding Climate Justice

Facilitated by Mr. Maxwell Kojo Beganim, the session grounded participants in global and local climate inequities. Youth explored how environmental degradation disproportionately affects communities such as Prampram.

2. Climate Policy & Advocacy Tools

Led by Mr. Solomon Djangmah, this session bridged knowledge and action by introducing policy frameworks, advocacy strategies, and youth influence pathways within governance structures.

3. Climate Storytelling & Messaging

Miss Dora Larweh and Mr. Peter Martin trained participants in the art of storytelling — a powerful tool to shape narratives, engage communities, and inspire policy change. Their session helped youth craft compelling climate justice messages rooted in lived experiences.

4. Regional Cooperation & Movement Building

ICCDI’s Ismailia Shittu guided participants on how to build and sustain regional networks of climate advocates. His session emphasized cooperation across borders — a necessity for confronting shared challenges across West Africa.

Community Voices and Interventions

A notable highlight was the address from the Chief Fisher of Prampram, who provided real-world insights into the threats facing coastal livelihoods. His message underscored that climate justice is not only theoretical — it is deeply personal for those whose daily lives are shaped by environmental shifts.

Certification Ceremony: Celebrating Commitment

The training concluded with the award of 50 Certificates of Participation, symbolizing not just completion, but a collective pledge to advance climate justice.Images from page 12 of the report vividly capture moments of pride and solidarity as participants received certificates from facilitators and dignitaries.

A New Chapter for Youth Climate Advocacy in Africa

The Climate Justice Advocacy Training – Ghana Edition is more than an event; it is a landmark contribution to building a resilient and justice-driven youth climate movement.

The conclusion of the report states it clearly:This initiative has “positioned youth at the forefront of climate justice engagement in Ghana and the wider West African region.” It fostered knowledge exchange rooted in indigenous experience and highlighted the urgent climate realities facing coastal communities.

FCA’s commitment remains unwavering — to empower young Africans to rise, lead, and demand climate justice with courage and clarity.

A Youth-Powered Future

The Ghana Edition demonstrated that when youth are given the right knowledge, tools, and platforms, they become unstoppable forces for environmental transformation. Their stories, strategies, and solidarity echo a promise:

Africa’s future will be shaped by young leaders who refuse to be silent in the face of the climate crisis.

The training stands as a powerful testament to what happens when community, leadership, and purpose converge — a testament recorded in this report and carried forward by every participant.
