Understanding Volunteerism
Volunteerism is often portrayed as a selfless act, offering time, skills, or resources to support causes, communities, or organizations without expecting monetary compensation. While this altruistic perspective is commendable, it's essential to recognize that volunteering is a two-way street. Beyond the immediate impact on beneficiaries, volunteering offers profound personal growth opportunities for the volunteer.
Engaging in volunteer activities can enhance self-esteem, develop new skills, expand social networks, increase empathy, and provide a sense of purpose. These benefits underscore the importance of reflecting on one's personal gains from volunteerism.
My Volunteer Journey
In 2007, I embarked on a volunteer journey with a clear ambition: to leverage volunteerism and global platforms to become a voice and advocate on the international stage. This path led me to numerous opportunities, culminating in a moment captured in a photograph accompanying this article, me holding the "Act Now" sign alongside fellow World YMCA volunteers and Secretary General Carlos Sanvee at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in 2019, I have volunteered and work on different projects across 43 countries and have delivered on National, Continental and Global Stage.
This journey wasn't accidental; it was the result of intentionality, vision, and a commitment to personal growth through volunteerism.
The Catalyst: The Volunteer
While organizations and causes are vital, the true catalyst in volunteerism is the volunteer. It's the individual's passion, dedication, and vision that drive change. Therefore, the pivotal question every volunteer must ask is: "What am I getting from volunteerism?"
This introspection isn't about selfishness; it's about ensuring that while you contribute to causes, you're also nurturing your growth, skills, and aspirations. Such self-awareness ensures sustainability in your volunteer efforts and prevents burnout.
Balancing Self-sacrifice and Personal Growth
Some schools of thought might shy away from focusing on personal gains in volunteerism, emphasizing the cause over the individual. However, neglecting personal development can lead to disillusionment. It's crucial to strike a balance, supporting initiatives while also prioritizing your growth.
Volunteering can serve as a platform for skill acquisition, networking, and career advancement. Engaging in volunteer work can enhance your resume, provide valuable work experience, and open doors to new career opportunities. Recognizing and harnessing these benefits ensures a fulfilling volunteer experience.
A Cautionary Note
Throughout my journey, I've witnessed talented individuals pour their hearts into organizations that didn't reciprocate their dedication. These volunteers, despite their contributions, found themselves stagnant, having neglected their personal growth. This observation inspired me to pen this article, to caution and guide emerging volunteers.
Volunteerism is noble, but it's imperative to keep your vision and ambition at the forefront. Leverage volunteer platforms to achieve your goals, ensuring that your journey is both impactful and personally rewarding.
Embracing the Dual Impact
Volunteering is a symbiotic relationship. As you offer your time and skills to causes, ensure you're also reaping personal benefits, be it skill development, networking, or personal fulfillment. By doing so, you not only enhance your life but also amplify the impact of your volunteer efforts.
In conclusion, always remember: The ultimate game-changer in volunteerism is you. Prioritize your growth, stay aligned with your vision, and continue to make meaningful contributions to the causes you hold dear.
