Strengthening Ties for a Greener Future: Africa-Australia Collaboration on Clean Energy and Critical Minerals

ree

On March 27, 2025, I had the privilege of representing Frontline for Climate Action at a high-level climate lecture hosted at the Ghana Communications Technology University (GCTU), organized by the Australian High Commission. Themed “The Future for Africa/Australia Clean Energy and Critical Mineral Partnership,” the event served as a platform for fostering meaningful dialogue on sustainable development through clean energy and resource cooperation between the two regions.

The lecture brought together a diverse group of stakeholders including academics, industry professionals, government representatives, and students, all focused on exploring the transformative potential of clean energy and critical mineral partnerships between Africa and Australia.

A Shared Vision for Sustainability

In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor of GCTU, Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, emphasized Ghana’s commitment to renewable energy innovation as a cornerstone for sustainable development and economic growth. He highlighted the vast opportunities for international collaboration, particularly in clean energy and critical mineral sectors, noting Ghana’s readiness to be a key player in global sustainability efforts.

Her Excellency Berenice Owen-Jones, Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, delivered the keynote address, outlining Australia’s significant investment of $76 million over six years towards combating climate challenges in Africa. She spoke passionately about the shared responsibility in tackling climate-induced threats to agriculture, urban development, and food security—stressing that these challenges are not confined to Africa but have global implications.

Her Excellency reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to supporting climate resilience initiatives and expressed Australia’s ambition to host COP31. She also commended former President John Dramani Mahama for establishing Ghana’s Ministry of Climate Change and Sustainability, led by Hon. Issifu Seidu—a move that exemplifies forward-thinking governance in the face of climate adversity.

Key Highlights from the Lecture

The lecture featured deep dives into several pertinent themes:

  • Clean Energy Transition: Emphasis was placed on renewable sources like solar, wind, and hydro, with discussions around their critical role in reducing carbon emissions and driving green growth.

  • Africa-Australia Collaboration: Participants explored how strategic partnerships can accelerate sustainable energy solutions and tap into critical mineral reserves vital for clean technologies.

  • Economic and Technological Opportunities: Experts highlighted job creation, innovation, and knowledge transfer as major benefits of investing in clean energy.

  • Challenges and Solutions: Practical issues such as infrastructure deficits, policy incoherence, and financing gaps were acknowledged, alongside proposed innovative solutions.

Recommendations for Action

The session concluded with actionable recommendations, including:

  • Strengthening policy frameworks to support clean energy development.

  • Increasing investments in renewable energy infrastructure.

  • Enhancing academic and industry collaborations to spur innovation.

  • Raising community awareness and education on clean energy benefits.

A Call for Global Cooperation

The climate lecture at GCTU was more than a forum—it was a call to action. It reaffirmed the importance of international cooperation in achieving a sustainable future. The event underscored the value of continuous dialogue, strategic research, and strong partnerships across continents.

To effectively address the climate crisis, global solidarity is not just desirable—it is indispensable. By working together, Africa and Australia can pave the way toward a resilient, equitable, and sustainable energy future.
