We are pleased to announce that Frontline for Climate Action has received a grant of $3,000 from the Global Greengrants Fund (UK/Europe), awarded upon the recommendation of the Oilwatch Advisory Board.
This support will fund our project: “Powering Justice: Grassroots Advocacy for Energy Sovereignty and a Just Transition in Ghana.” This initiative sits firmly within our Just Transition thematic area at Frontline for Climate Action, where we work to ensure that climate solutions are equitable, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of frontline communities.
Ghana is at a critical energy crossroads. While fossil fuel expansion continues, many communities—especially women and youth—face environmental degradation, rising energy costs, and increasing climate vulnerability, often without meaningful inclusion in decision-making processes. This project is designed to address that gap by placing grassroots voices at the center of the energy transition.
Over the next six months, the project will implement a series of targeted interventions led primarily by women and youth (ages 18–35):
• Stakeholder Advocacy Dialogues – We will convene inclusive, multi-stakeholder forums bringing together government representatives, traditional authorities, civil society actors, women’s groups, and youth leaders to engage on fossil fuel development, renewable energy alternatives, and community-centered policy pathways. These engagements will inform the development of policy briefs.
• Women in Energy Justice Movement Program – We will train 50 women climate advocates in energy literacy, policy engagement, and campaign strategies, and establish a Women for Energy Sovereignty Network to sustain long-term leadership and advocacy.
• Environmental Justice Campaigns – Through community outreach, storytelling, and media engagement, we will amplify frontline voices and raise awareness on the environmental and social impacts of extractive activities, while challenging false climate solutions.
• Energy Sovereignty Awareness Initiative – We will promote decentralized renewable energy solutions such as solar mini-grids and rooftop systems, alongside developing educational toolkits to deepen public understanding of just transition pathways.
Through this initiative, we aim to strengthen community participation in energy policy, elevate women’s leadership in climate action, and build a more informed and mobilized grassroots movement for a just and inclusive energy future in Ghana.
We warmly invite stakeholders—government institutions, civil society, development partners, and the private sector—to engage with and support this initiative in any way they can.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the Global Greengrants Fund (UK/Europe) for their generous support, and to the Oilwatch Advisory Board for their recommendation and continued commitment to grassroots climate justice efforts.
Together, we move forward in advancing energy sovereignty, environmental justice, and a truly just transition.
