Empowering Local Leaders: Workshop on Climate Change Education and Governance

All is set for the highly anticipated Integrating Climate Change Education into Local Governance Workshop and Training. This initiative is part of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Youth Climate Action Fund Project, supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG). The event aims to empower local stakeholders with the knowledge and tools to address the climate crisis effectively through education and governance.

The training is designed for a diverse group of participants, including elected Assembly members, government appointees, elected unit committee members, technical staff of the Sub-Metros, and other key stakeholders. This inclusive approach ensures that all levels of local governance are equipped with the necessary knowledge and resources to drive effective climate action within their communities.

The workshop will kick off with the arrival and registration of participants, followed by a welcome address by Peter Martin, setting the tone for a day of insightful discussions and practical sessions. Cedric Dzelu, Executive Director of Frontline for Climate Action, will deliver a statement outlining the organization’s mission and its role in promoting climate resilience at the grassroots level.

Solidarity statements will follow, delivered by Mrs. Mercy Y.A.A. Odoi of the Ashiedu Keteke Sub-Metro, Mrs. Neurki Sodjah of the Ablekuma South Sub-Metro, and Mr. David Aboagye of the Okaikoi South Sub-Metro. These statements will emphasize the vital role of local governments in fostering collaborative action against climate change. The event will also have the distinguished presence of Mr. Kwabena Nketia Addae, Executive Director of the Ghana YMCA, who will join as one of the guests of honor. A group photo session will then capture the unity and commitment of all participants.

Peter Martin will present the findings of a baseline report, offering a comprehensive overview of current challenges and opportunities in integrating climate education into local governance. This will set the stage for the technical training sessions.

The training program includes four key modules:

  1. Introduction to Climate Change – Cedric Dzelu will provide a foundational understanding of climate change, its causes, and its far-reaching impacts.

  2. The Role of Local Governance in Climate Action in Ghana – Solomon Djangmah will explore how local governance structures can drive effective climate interventions.

  3. Community-Led Climate Solutions – Cedric Dzelu will discuss strategies for empowering communities to lead climate initiatives.

  4. Practical Steps Toward Climate-Sensitive Policy Making – Solomon Djangmah, joined by Noveli E-Solutions, will outline actionable steps for incorporating climate considerations into policy development.

Two panel discussions will follow the training sessions. The first will focus on the “Realities on the Ground,” providing insights into the challenges faced by local communities. The second will look “Beyond This Project,” exploring long-term strategies for sustainability and impact.

The event will conclude with refreshments and final remarks, leaving participants equipped with the knowledge and motivation to take climate action forward.

This workshop, supported by AMA, Bloomberg Philanthropies, and UCLG, marks a pivotal step in aligning local governance with climate education, ensuring that communities are not only informed but also empowered to take decisive action in building a sustainable future.
