Frontline for Climate Action Joins Forces with IOM Ghana and AMA to Combat Climate Change in Accra

Ahead of World Environment Day, Frontline for Climate Action, IOM Ghana, and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) have come together to address the pressing issue of climate change in Ghana's capital city. As part of the "Strengthening the Capacity of the City of Accra to Manage Human Mobility in the Context of Climate Change" project, funded by the IOM Development Fund, the two-day workshop on the nexus of migration, environment, and climate change (MECC) brought together stakeholders from various sectors to share knowledge and expertise.

The workshop, which took place from 3rd to 4th June 2024 at the Accra City Hotel , was attended by representatives from the AMA, Ministry of the Interior, Ghana, Environmental Protection Agency, Ghana, civil society organizations (CSOs), academia, and C40 Cities. Frontline for Climate Action was among the CSOs that participated in the workshop, with its Executive Director, Cedric Dzelu, representing the organization.

The workshop aimed to enhance the capacity of stakeholders to better contribute to policy interventions that reduce the vulnerabilities of climate change in cities. The MECC nexus is a critical area of focus, as climate change is increasingly affecting human mobility and migration patterns. By bringing together experts from various fields, the workshop aimed to facilitate a deeper understanding of the complex issues surrounding climate change and human migration.

"We are thrilled to be part of this initiative and to collaborate with like-minded organizations to address the pressing issue of climate change in Accra," said Cedric Dzelu, Executive Director of Frontline for Climate Action. "This workshop has provided a valuable platform for us to share knowledge and expertise with other stakeholders, and we look forward to working together to build a more resilient and sustainable future for our city."

The workshop's outcomes will inform policy interventions that prioritize the needs of vulnerable populations and promote sustainable urban development. The partnership between IOM Ghana, AMA, and Frontline for Climate Action demonstrates a commitment to tackling climate change at the local level and showcases the importance of collaboration between government agencies, CSOs, and international organizations.

As Ghana continues to grapple with the impacts of climate change, initiatives like this workshop will play a crucial role in building a more resilient future for its citizens. Frontline for Climate Action is proud to be part of this effort and looks forward to continued collaboration with IOM Ghana and AMA in addressing climate change in Accra.
